Leadership Bites Archives
Leadership Bites is a series of leadership thoughts for reflection and discussion.
"We" is a powerful word!
"Two heads are better than one", "Many hands make light work", "And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him - a threefold cord is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12)".
There's a reason that these sayings and Scripture exist - because it's true! We can accomplish and withstand adversities much more efficiently if we work together. Everyone of us brings something different to a team and it's that diversity that results in success.
The next time you are thinking of tackling something alone, invite someone to help you. You will find that the journey will be much more enjoyable if you do so. As John Maxwell often says in his "a Minute with Maxwell" videos "Teamwork makes the dream work!"

Why are YOU here?
"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed" - Mwai Kibaki
A wise man once said if you are holding a leadership position for benefits such as money and power then you are in it for the wrong reason. True leaders thrive on moulding people; watching them grow into independent learners and doers. He or she teaches, guides and sets examples for others so that they become better people.
True leaders are in it for the giving, not the taking. Giving their time, knowledge, and expertise so that others can take away something valuable and applicable. To a true leader, progress and growth are worth more money then all the money they will ever make!

Tomorrow Is Always A Busy Day
I trust we have all heard the familiar saying "Do not put off for tomorrow what can be done today". Having said that, I was suppose to post this two nights ago :)
All jokes aside, many of us put off things that need to be done for another time. I know I have often said "I'll do that later". The trouble is, we do not know what later will bring. When we finally get around to the activity in question there may be another activity that needs immediate attention and time. In fact, we aren't really sure if there will be a later.
Seize the moment. Do while you can. Act as if there won't be another chance to complete what you are doing. Productivity will increase and stress will decrease!

Don't Worry, Be Happy
Such a simple idea, yet it seems to be so hard for us to do: Don't worry! When you stop to think about it, what good does it do? At best it gives you something to do but it solves nothing. In fact it just makes any situation that much more worse.
It's human nature to worry. We should, however, be conscience of the fact that there are a lot of things that we cannot change and some things are what they are. Worrying about an outcome will not change it. This applies to everything from worrying about a test score to the tests results the doctor has or will give you.
The old prayer rings true:
God, give me grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things which should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguish one from the other.
We should trust in God to take care of the details. He has a plan. Worrying just gets in the way. So it can be that simple: Don't worry, be happy!
The rest of that prayers says:
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.

Are you too big to reach high?
We, my son and I, were on Skype chatting with his grandparents the other day and he said "but, I'm too big to reach high!" Being three years of age he is still figuring out the language and what are the appropriate things to say. Still, what he said caused me to think: how many of us are prevented from reaching higher in our careers or personal lives because we are apparently too big too learn new things, to lean on others for help, and to know our limitations.
It's my belief that, in all aspects of our lives, we should practice a certain degree of humility. We should realize that we are never to "big" or too old to rely on others to help us through. It shouldn't be beyond us to learn new things and we shouldn't be so naive to think that we can do everything!

If you are the smartest person of the people you hang around with, then you are hanging around with the wrong crowd.
It's a long title, I know! But when my father said this the other night it struck home and I felt like sharing it with you. He caused me to think about the people I associate with and why.
I enjoy playing basketball and badminton. However, I do not enjoy playing these sports against people who are less talented than I. As a matter of fact I don't like playing against someone who is my equal NEAR AS MUCH as playing someone who is better than me. I believe that only by playing someone who is more experienced and talented than I am at the sport will I learn new things and grow and develop my skills.
This can be applied to any aspect of your personal and professional life. Be conscience of who you associate yourself with. Ask yourself this question: Does this person or do these people hold me back because they do not challenge me or do they cause me to challenge myself; to grow and develop into what I have the potential to be?

The Follow Through
I'm a parent and a teacher. In both areas of my life I know at least one thing to be true: to be effective I need to follow through with my 'threats' as well as my promises. If I say I'm going to do something, I'm going to do something. My child and my students know that they can count on my word and they know what to expect.
A good leader does the same. He or she knows that being consistent and following through on things creates an atmosphere where people know what will happen and can trust that things will get done. If you are constantly making promises (both for good or disciplinary measures) and you do not follow through on them people come to know you are not good on your word and they are less likely to respect and follow you.

The Spirit of Christmas
'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the town, people are putting up lights and running around. Getting things ready for that one special day, when Santa would arrive in his reindeer driven sleigh. The adults, they all know, what really happens Christmas Eve, but the children are all excited because they still believe. So I ask you, as we approach Christmas day, even though Santa is not real, does the spirit of Christmas still stay?
I can't remember when I found out about dear ol' Santa, but I do know that Christmas is still an exciting and special time for me. I have come to understand that, even though Santa does not exist, the ideas and feelings associated with him are quite real! I appreciate this more and more every year as I watch my son grow and come to know who Santa is and the potential he brings.
I believe that the spirit of Christmas lies within each one of us and 'Santa Claus' is just one way we express it. I challenge you not to lose that spirit. If you let it, the preparation for Christmas can be financially and emotionally draining. However, if you do not lose sight of what Christmas is truly about, it can be the most magical time of the year.

In with the new! Out with the old?
It's a brand new year - another chance to get it right! Most of us take this opportunity to make a change in our lives to better ourselves. It could be to lose weight, learn a new skill, or give up a bad habit. But how many of us resolve to continue to do things that we have already been doing?
As we reflect upon the last year we must not only point out where we need to improve, but we must also recognize the things that we are doing that are positive. Once those have been isolated then we must resolve to continue to do them.
What will you carry into the new year?

What’s love got to do with it?
Wednesday past we celebrated national pink shirt day in our school. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness that bullying in the school and community is a reality. Also, it’s a time for us to reflect on what we can and should do to make sure our students feel safe and cared for! Everyone deserves to be loved and treated equally.
Good leaders recognize the importance of creating a safe environment for their team members. Showing them that they are cared for and treated equally creates an environment where people want to come and work. When people feel comfortable, safe and cared for productivity increases.

You want less stress? Just Listen!
I'm going to share something with you now that is so simple, yet it is an important step towards reducing the amount of stress in your life. I didn't realize this was even causing me stress until I read about it in a book called "Don't sweat the small stuff....and it's all small stuff". Are you ready for it? The key to reducing some of the stress in your life is to LISTEN!
Have you ever been in conversation with someone and found that they were trying to finish your sentences? like they were trying to guess what you were about to say. Maybe you are guilty of it yourself. Believe it or not this simple act of not listening and trying to guess or assume you know what they are going to say can cause stress on you or the person you are conversing with.
Try it. Listen, intently and completely. Give the other person a chance to say what they have to say. You'll discover that, not only will you gather information but you'll experience less stress doing so!

What good is paint if it's left in the can?
It's that time again! The walls need a new coat of paint. You head to the paint store, get a gallon of the colour you want and bring it home. Finally, you lay the can on the floor and leave the room that is to be painted hoping that when you return the job will be done. Sounds ridiculous doesn't it?! So does having a talent and not using it!
A good leader recognizes that each individual has a talent or skill that should be used towards the greater good. He knows that a talent not used is a talent wasted. So, he teaches the follower that having a talent is one thing but putting in the effort needed to develop it and put it to use is another thing.
Go ahead, open the can and apply the paint!
You Never Know Unless You Try
I'd like to share this story with you:
Last week I was in class and a knock came on the door. One of my students got up to let another student back into the classroom. Just as the first student opened the door for the other student the second one said (as he was coming through the door) "sure the door was opened all along". He didn't know this because he didn't bother to try it.
Albeit a simple allegory, it made me think that something like this happens to a lot of us. I'm not just referring to a door in the literal sense. How many proverbial doors are open to us but we don't know it because we don't try it? The old saying is true, you never know unless you try!
Strength
What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word strength? Chances are are you associate it with strong muscles, being able to lift heavy objects and maybe weight lifting. This idea relates the word solely to the physical aspect of our being.
Strength, however, encompasses so much more than being strong physically. In the teaching profession we are taught that students have different strengths. In other words children vary in their abilities to complete certain tasks. One could be good at working on cars and carpentry while others excel at music and the arts.
Strength could also be associated with our character and personality. We could be people who never waver from our beliefs and always stand up for what is right. Maybe we are the kind of people who are out going and easily meet new people.
Finally maybe our strength lies in leading people or following others.
In conclusion, we are all strong at something. Do you know what your strengths are? Identify them and put them to good use!
What you do has far greater impact than what you say. — Stephen Covey
Have you ever had that one person who is 'all talk and no action'? The person was either lying or sincere in their word but whatever the reason they didn't see it through. Eventually he or she becomes known as someone who you can't believe they will do what they say.
Actions speak louder than words! We can all say that we are going to do something or act a certain way but it's not until we actually do it that it takes on real meaning. Whether you are sincere in your word or not, if you do not bring life to those words then the validity of your word is lost.
When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves.' - Lao Tzu
A true leader equips others with the tools for success and teaches how to use them. Like a parent rearing a child, the leader wishes to see the follower become an independent person who is capable of working with others towards a goal.
The true leader knows that the ultimate goal is to get to a point where the follower doesn't need someone to guide them. It's then that both follower and leader are content.
Conflict
Whether it is internal or external we all experience conflict. If you are like me you try to avoid it as much as possible. There are times, however, when you have to address the issue that is causing the conflict.
True leaders know that conflict has to be handled in a timely fashion. The issue should be addressed soon after it occurs but not too soon. Often conflict conjures up emotions that can cause people to say things without giving it any thought or act in ways that will worsen the situation and they will regret. Thus, taking time to let emotions subside and to organize your thoughts, about what has happened, is important.
On the other side of the coin, letting a lot of time pass before dealing with the conflict is also detrimental. Other conflicts could arise in the meantime and when you do get a chance to address the first one the point becomes mute.
We all experience conflict. Learning to deal with it the right is an important skill to acquire.
The Itsy Bitsy Spider Had The Right Idea
I was singing to my son the other night and one of our song choices was "The Itsy Bitsy Spider". Such a simple song yet I can't help wonder if it was created to teach children a lesson about perseverance and determination.
I bet you can think about a few times where you gave up on something or someone. It's very easy to do. Some of us can really get discouraged and quit when times seem rough. It's at these times that we should think about Itsy! How many times has that spider attempted to climb the water spout just to get washed back down by the rain. Each time, however, she gets back up and takes another stab at it.
What's the rain in your situation? What's preventing you from reaching your goal. Whatever it is, don't give up! There will be sun and eventually you will get to the place you want to be!
Who is a leader?
One of the main ingredients of a leader is the power to influence people. If you stop to think about it, we all have, in some way, influenced someone or a group of people. So to answer the question “who is a leader?” You are! You may not think of yourself in this way because when you think of a leader you probably think of someone in a high position of an organization (i.e. Principal in a school). While this is true a leader can be anyone in any position. What makes someone a great leader vs. a lousy one is a different story!

What good is a compass if you do not have a destination in mind?
In the last four weeks I've talked about a number of topics and on more than one occasion I've mentioned about setting goals. No matter who you are or the position you are in, it is necessary to determine where you want to go or the things you would like to accomplish. Once you set a destination, you can then accurately choose the route and tools needed to get there. Without a particular end in mind, how can you possibly know where to start and the skills and tools you need along the way.
One of the keys to a successful partnership or organization is setting down some clear cut goals so that everyone knows what they are working towards. Once people have a sense of purpose and direction you'll be surprised at the things they can do.

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other - John
Fitzgerald Kennedy
When you think of someone as a leader, what qualities do expect them to have? I'm sure we could come up with an extensive list. I would be curious if 'knowledgable' would be among the top of our compilations.
Sometimes people make the mistake of assuming the leader knows everything. To the contrary, leaders lack in certain knowledge and skills. In fact, recognizing that there is a lot left to learn and seeking out that knowledge is a characteristic of a good leader.
He or she realizes that they need to constantly undergo professional development to acquire skills and knowledge that they know they lack.
Many may see the lack of knowledge and certain skills as a weakness. Leaders, on the other hand, see this as an opportunity to utilize others that have the traits and knowledge they need; adding value to members of the team.
We should all recognize we have a lot to learn and.....learn it!
Priorities
Are you familiar with the old demonstration where the speaker uses various size stones placed in a jar? Each size stone represents things in our lives - the smaller the pebble the less important that thing is to us. In the first part of the lesson the small pebbles are put in first followed by the next larger stones and finally the largest. In this situation it is difficult to place the larger rocks in the jar because the smaller rocks have taken up much of the space.
In the second part of the activity the speaker begins by place the bigger rocks - the more important things in our lives - first. The smaller rocks seem to fit in easily around the big rocks.
This simple, but powerful, activity suggests to us that we must put what matters to us most first in our lives. These things include family, friends and faith. Everything else can find a place within this priority structure. But if you put the less important things first, it can become difficult to make room for what's most important.
Determine what is of most value to you and place that high on your priority list. Make sure it comes first. Everything else will find a place around it.

The customer is always Right!
My son was watching one of his shows the other day and the characters were singing 'the customer's always right!' I'm not sure why, but it caused me to reflect on the fact that traditional leaders work on the premise that they know everything and have all the answers. Followers often feel like this is the case as well. A transitional leader, however, understands that he or she does not have all the answers or tools for reaching a goal. They do have the skill of placing value in others and directing them towards a common end. Good leaders are not too proud to say 'I don't know everything, I need your help. They understand that, as John Maxwell says, "it takes team work to make the dream work."

Jack of all Trades, Master of None
I've been teaching for almost ten years and one of the many things I have learned is: if I get involved in too much, take too much on, then I never do any one particular thing justice. As a young teacher, I wanted to help out wherever I could. Even though my intentions were good, my contributions were not what they could or should be. I was putting my energy into making many small, often unreliable, efforts.
In the teaching field we always stress to the students that it's not about quantity, it's about quality"! My advice to you: if you wish to get involved in your organization do so by occupying one or two roles. Focus all your energy into performing your role well. You'll find people will respect you more for doing things right and seeing things through.

Contentment
I wanted a fancy title for this week's thought, but soon came to realize that the word is powerful enough to stand alone. It is the difference between being truly happy or being.....well...discontent and miserable.
I'm guilty of wanting more. If I let myself, I could always be in a state of want and never be happy. The truth is I have everything that I need and more. I need to learn to be content.
It's a concept that a lot of people have trouble with. What they do not realize is that what needs to be acquired is not more material things but an appreciation for what they already have.
How many of you can say that you are satisfied? If you answered 'no' then maybe you need to change the way you look at things and start to appreciate what is already in your possession.

Doing good for others starts with you!
I think it's a fair assumption that, no matter what position you occupy, performing well is one desired goal. Most of us want to be good at what we do and we desire to see that we are contributing to a team and helping others. But we cannot expect to perform to this level if we do not take care of ourselves first. I know that first off it sounds a little selfish, but I assure you it's far from it.
To be at the top of your game you need to make sure you are as strong as you can be in mind, body, and spirit. Meditating, exercising, and exploring your faith are practices that anyone should carry out on a daily basis. Take time out of your schedule to exercise! It will increase your health, make you feel better and give you much more energy for any task at hand. Set aside a few moments out of everyday to meditate on the events of recent times to pin point what is going right and what you need to work on. Finally, exploring your faith let's you, among other things, instill some purpose in your life.
Once you are as strong as you can be, you can be all you can be for others.
